San Jose Earthquakes Return

Published by Robert under Sport

Well, it won’t really be the old Quakes, but on Wednesday Oakland A’s owners Lew Wolff and John Fisher announced that MLS soccer will return the the Bay Area in 2008. This announcement is long overdue, thanks to the collapse of a stadium deal with SJSU a couple of months ago. Pending approval from the city, the new stadium will begin contruction near the SJ International Airport. Combined with the arrival of David Beckham, this should make 2008 a kickass year for MLS soccer. Follow the Earthquakes HERE.

UPDATE 7/23/07: The Quakes are now accepting deposits for season tickets HERE.

Dude, I want to get a Dell with Ubuntu

Published by Robert under Tech

linux_3x_banner.jpgWhile the rest of the world has been obsessing about the iPhone (which is out of the question for me because I’m not leaving Verizon for AT&T), I’ve been waging a quiet inner battle over Dell’s line of Linux PCs. On the one hand, I can hardly resist the allure of a shiny new notebook preloaded with functional drivers for all of the built-in hardware. On the other, there’s something decidedly anti-Linux about buying a preloaded Linux system. And while my aging Gateway is indisputably crappy, I just can’t justify buying another computer right now. Besides, if I were to shell out for a new laptop, it would probably be a MacBook Pro, which I could triple-boot with OS X, Linux, and Vista.

UPDATE 7/27/07: Screw it. I’m getting the Dell. I put my order in and it’ll be here in a couple of weeks. Ultimately, while I’d rather have the MacBook Pro, the Dell I ordered has almost exactly the same specs for about a thousand bucks less. If I need to run Mac OS X, I could always buy a basic MacBook for the purpose, and still end up spending the same as if I’d bought the MacBook Pro to begin with; only I’d get a whole nuther computer for the money. Them Apples is just too expensives.

NUTHER UPDATE 8/10/07: My Inspiron arrived yesterday, and I’m lovin’ it. Frankly the machine itself isn’t supremely kick-ass, but everything on it is working great, including Desktop Effects with Compiz. Check out my overall first impression at Maximum PC.
